CMNIT: Wirless Awareness PPT - 56 days ago, 2 comments
Hey Everyone, Attached is a copy of the PPT presentation from the Wireless Awareness event. Also, a few notes we mentioned: - Due to the increase of tech events around the area, CMNIT will now meet minimally twice a year. Don't worry, we're still involved in and promoting other IT events in the area. - Please contact myself or Roger if you're interested in presenting at an upcoming CMNIT event. Long (~1 hour) or short (15 min) presentations; We're interested in new ideas, and especially any interesting solutions to challenges you've overcome. - Saint Cloud VMUG is coming up next week. More info here: http://www.myvmug.org/e/in/eid=259 - Saint Cloud area "DEFCON" group is forming. Fill out this short survey and you'll be contacted later with more info: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/8BWSB9S - Roger is looking into the possibility of starting a Cisco UCS lunch-and-learn group. Please contact him if interested. I think that sums things up, thanks again! - CL

Went to the VSphere forum Thursday @ the Hyatt Regency. How disappointing. One long sales pitch and a wee bit of information.

Greetings! We're looking for a few people to present at an upcoming "Back to Basics" CMNIT event. The advanced and popular topics are always fun to throw together, but at times we tend to forget some of the most important aspects of system administration--the basics! We're looking for a few folks to toss together a quick (15 - 30 minute) presentation or two that outlines best practice, tips and tricks, and personal experience in day-to-day system administration. Heck, even if you can't stand power point presentations and just want to bring up a round-table good discussion, that works too. We're not looking for experts! (Although, if you happen to be a subject mater expert... by all means!) An interest in sharing your personal experiences and generating some good discussion is all that's required. Here's a few ideas of topics to get you started: - Basic Powershell cmdlets - Basic server role recommendations (File Server, Domain Controller, SQL, etc...) - Managing Active Directory Groups - Managing Shared Folders - Managing servers remotely via Computer Manager, SQL Management Studio, WMI, Powershell, etc... - Securely working with segmented credentials (elevated vs. user level privileges) - Text parsing/manipulation with Excel/Word - Working with NTFS Access Control Lists - Software you've found to be overly helpful - Anything you find helpful to your day-to-day system management. Please contact me if you're interested in presenting. Thanks again everyone! CL

Wrapped up in the Carrier IQ drama? Worried it may be installed on your Android device? Here's one way to check if Carrier IQ is installed... or at least a piece of it. I'm not sure if this works on all devices/phones, but it worked on my EVO 4G. We'll be using getprop to enumerate android system properties: - Open Terminal Emulator (download from the market place if you haven't already) - Enter the following command: getprop | grep iq If you don't have a pipe character | on your keyboard, you can use (Volume Up + L) to create one. Additionally, I've found logcat to be extremely handy in knowing what my phone is up to. Let's pipe it through grep and see what's going on with "IQ": logcat | grep iq Now that you've confirmed your suspicions, now might be a good time to root and find a good ROM to apply. :)

Thu, 12/1/11, 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm - Greetings everyone! It's been awhile since our last CMNIT meeting. Being the holidays are now here, I'd like to ramp things up a bit with a casual presentation, demonstration, and round table discussion on wireless awareness. Wireless is a fascinating, convenient technology and heavily relied upon in the personal and business world. However, that convenience comes at a cost. You may be surprised at how much info your wireless devices freely give out. If you, or your users own a wireless device, (smartphone, laptop, home router/AP) I encourage you to attend! Next user group scheduled for Thursday, December 1st at the Saint Cloud Library, in the Mississippi Room. CMNIT: Wireless Awareness • Overview of 802.11 beacons • Monitoring Wifi/Bluetooth traffic • SSID broadcasting behavior • Wifi/Bluetooth mapping (Wardriving) • Mitigation Agenda: - Wireless Awareness - Break / Open Discussion - Open Topic (TBA) - Open Discussion We try to provide snacks, so please RSVP: https://cmnit120111.eventbrite.com/ As always, anyone with an interest in technology is invited and encouraged to attend. Hope to see you there!

Tue, 11/29/11, 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm - Next meeting will be held at Mexican Village Too, on Tuesday, November 29th from 12p - 1p. Please RSVP with Carrie if you're planning on attending so she knows how many to expect. Hope to see you there! More Info from Carrie: "We meet on a monthly basis, usually the last Wednesday of the month between 12:00 and 1:00. Sometimes it is at a restaurant and sometimes it is a local business. Meals are on your own. Sometimes some of us get together and order in; others bring their lunch or choose not to eat during the meeting. We cover a variety of topics and sometimes have speakers come in. These meetings are not intended for sales pitches but instead a place for information, brainstorming and networking with other IT members of the community. The group ranges from low end users to high end techs; mostly being the people who need to make the technology work. If you are interested in attending these, please send me your email address. I send out agendas about a week before the meeting so we have some direction..."
